Twelve million copies sold and counting…

Until I saw an interview about the upcoming film adaptation of the book, I had not heard of it at all.

As part of my mission to read more, I decided to grab the book for my kindle and read. And boy, it was hard to put down.

I tend to read before I go to sleep, and while reading this book, there were many nights when I struggled not just to read one more chapter.

Amazon describes:

For years, rumours of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life — until the unthinkable happens. Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Where the crawdads sing

Reece Witherspoon — “I read this novel probably in one day, maybe two days. I just couldn’t put it down,” says Witherspoon, a producer on the film who also selected Crawdads for her famed book club. “I fell in love with Kya as the main character, as a little girl growing up in this very rural area, shunned by society, and trying to find a way to save herself, survive. And the way that Delia Owens wrote this book with such authenticity, you could tell she grew up in this place and appreciated the nature around her. The book is a love letter to growing up in the South, which resonated because I grew up in New Orleans and Nashville.”

One of those books

It is one of those books that leaves you breathless. You want everyone you know to read and love it as much as you do.

It is a book you could read in a day as you want to know what will happen. How will she continue to survive? And how familiar is this story?

As an Australian, I am unfamiliar with this location, but I was taken there by the authors' words. It made me wonder how many other Kya’s are in this world and how they find the internal strength to go on.

I cannot wait to see the movie.
